The Helman Lieber Collection of Manuscript Scores

An introduction to the collection

Cantor Helman Lieber created seven bound, hand-scribed manuscripts comprising the complete synagogue services for Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur. They are intended for cantor and choir in a traditional Ashkenazi setting. Most likely they were written in the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s.

This is a new kind of project for the DJSA in that it consists mainly of manuscripts.  We also have one brief amateur audio recording of Cantor Lieber at age 75, which corresponds to the book "Shabbat - 6 Stave". Thus far, DJSA has concentrated exclusively on audio material, however, when approached by Cantor Lieber’s family, we were impressed by the unique nature of this collection. While it consists of very little audio material, we were struck by how well it complements our mission to make available a wide variety of Jewish sounds to researchers and scholars everywhere.

We are trying to present this collection in a way that is logical and convenient for studying its contents.  Suggestions on how we could improve the organization of these documents are welcome.  You may use the "Contact Us" link in the Home tab above.
