Born in 1890 in Belarus, Sarah Benjamin settled in Canton, OH. She was a veritable 'memory bank' of Yiddish folksongs, and was tape-recorded on basic reel-to-reel equipment in Canton during the years 1967-1981 by her grandson, Sheldon Benjamin. Sarah Benjamin's recordings were hailed by the Yiddish ethnomusicolgists Ruth Rubin and Khane Mlotek as the largest known one-person recordiing of Yiddish folksong.
